How to Get Started on the Internet

May 9th, 2008 · No Comments

House keeping basics

This is intended to help anybody make money from the Internet, to make money and have time to enjoy it, so I recommend that if you haven’t already, you should spend some time getting organized so that you do not have to waste time doing “housekeeping” that you can use productively.

Pick a Browser

The first tool that you should have is a good tabbed browser, I recommend Crazy Browser, with a pop up killer built in this is the best surfing browser I have tried, and while I try each new one that I find I keep coming back to this one. Click here for a free download

Another good alternative is Firefox which is better know, and works well with most programs. They are both very good, and while I do favor Crazy browser, I do also have Firefox on my machine.

Extra Email accounts

The next thing that you should consider, is do you want the email address that you use now to become loaded with adverts and other junk mail, if not I think its worth setting up free email accounts for use when signing up for traffic exchanges, safelists, or any offer that might get an auto responder reply.

You can get free accounts from

Mail.com

Walla.com

Yahoo.com

and many others,

Because it is one of the newest walla has fewer subscribers so the chances of getting the name that you want is higher ( don’t be put off that the site is in Hebrew, it works just like all the others)

Roboform

Another tool that saves me countless hours, is an automatic form filler and password utility called roboform, once you have filled in your profile, the utility can automatically fill application forms for you, it will also remember and fill in your login and password details for each site that you visit. you can download a free trial version here

Site Rotator

To make life a little simpler, I use a rotator, which is a program where you enter the sites you want to advertise, and then advertise that rotator site URL. every time you get a hit on the rotator URL it shows one of your site adverts

This is great, because all you ever need to advertise is 1 URL and any changes you want to make to the sites you are advertising you only make once on the rotator site. The downside of rotators is a lot of autotraffic exchanges don’t allow them, because they cant control what sites are shown. One of the best rotators available is pageswirl, and you can get a free 5 URL rotator here

Where to get traffic

What ever opportunity you want to promote you will have a site that you need to advertise, whether its an affiliate page, a splash page or your own site.

Traffic is the most important aspect of promoting your opportunity, if no one knows about your site no one will visit. There are lots of ways to get traffic to your site, some are free, and some cost money.

I will look at the various options, and explain how they work and how to get the best out of them.

Autosurfing

Autosurfing is a free way to get traffic to your site, and works as the name implies, you sign up and enter the url of the site that you want to advertise, then when that is accepted into the rotation, you get your site seen for every credit that you earn by surfing, that means that you login to the surf page and the sites in rotation are shown automatically for a period of time between 6 and 30 seconds depending on the autosurf site. This means that you can leave your computer running unattended and build up significant amounts of credits, the down side is that so can every other autosurfer, so the chances of your site being seen by an interested human is remote. There is one thing that autosurfs are good for, and that is generating hits, which is what you need to increase the position of your site in Alexia.com rankings.

Manual surfing

Manual surfing is much more productive, because the surfer has to click on each page to earn credit before it moves on to the next page.

This means that your page is seen by a real person, who is also surfing to promote their product so they are already interested in making money on the internet, so they are open to the right offer. By using a tabbed browser you can comfortably surf up to 10 sites at a time and earn about 1000 credits for 1 to 2 hours surfing, if you do this as a regular part of your days activity this will produce about 30000 hits to your site a month.

Because most manual traffic exchanges have affiliate schemes you can leverage your credits by using some of then to advertise other exchanges that you are a member of when you get members sign up under you you will earn a percentage of their earning.

Purchased Hits

Purchased hits, are a viable alternative to surfing as long as your budget will stand it.

Paid sign ups

This is only effective if the program you want the sign ups for is free, if not you will find yourself loosing the sign up as soon as the free period expires.

Some companies that offer paid sign ups have no quality monitoring, and are not much better than a scam. The only program that I have successfully use paid sign ups in has been Bux.to a paid to click program.

Hosting

If you want to develop your own site you will need to get a domain name, which is unique to you, the name you choose should ideally have a relationship with the key words that you use for the search engines to home in on, for example 2 of the key words that I use with this site are “Tips” and “Internet tips” so you can see that http://tips4-u.com is tailored to the market that I want to attract.

I have used several companies to host my sites in the past, but the best service for a paid host that I have found is Midphase, one of their companies AN Hosting has the best prices in the group, without loosing quality, they offer many different plans, and are full service hosting providers meaning you get all the facilities that you will need including cpanel, php, mysql and many others.

The best value that I have found, is Doteasy, they give free 100 mb hosting for each name that is registered with them. Click here to visit but they are only basic accounts, for the facilities that I just listed above they do charge.

Ftp Software

Once you have your hosting account you will want to be able to upload your website, for this you will want a FTP client, the initials stand for File Transfer Protocol and while there are 100’s to choose from one of the easiest that I have used is Filezilla, a free download

Internet Searching, Have you Found What You Were Looking For?

10 tips for Better Search Results

The Internet is a huge storehouse of knowledge, but unless you can find your way to that information it is useless. Here are some tips to make life easier for you when searching.

Take your time and start with a pen and paper, write down what you want to find, Choosing the right search terms is the key to finding the information you need. e.g. If you where to search for me on the web you could try “Graham Taylor”, “Graham A Taylor”, “Graham Andrew Taylor”, profile “Graham Andrew Taylor”,

With names you will get better results by enclosing the names in exclamation marks (”) this will make the search engine look at the group of words as a whole rather that individually.

Start with a general term, and then narrow the range, for example if you are looking for a car, just entering “car” will return about 990,000,000 results, “Ford car” reduces that to 8,430,000 while “ford mustang 2008″ cuts that down to about 901,000. Ford Mustang 2008 Arizona, further reduces the number of results to around 312,000 so you can see the more refined your search term the more specific your results will be. Vary the order of the word you search with, as you saw above ford mustang 2008 Arizona gave us 312,000 but “2008 mustang Ford Arizona” gave 128,000 and “Arizona mustang Ford 2008″ returned 948,000

Another way of using specific words is to use a plus + or minus sign in your search string. Using the same example as above you could enter Graham+Andrew+Taylor and get similar results. If you used the minus sign Graham+Andrew+Taylor-2007 the results would show any of the first set of results that did not contain the word 2007 for example any article that had a 2007 copyright tag.

Use “AND ” and “OR” and “NOT”to refine your search, as in “Graham Taylor”OR “Graham Andrew Taylor”NOT “Graham George Taylor”

Unless what you are searching for is a proper name use lower case letters to enter your search string, this will get the search engine to search both upper and lower case versions of the word.

Use more than one search engine, while Google is the largest, it still does not index the entire web, so you might get different results from different search engines, like Ask and MSN,

You can copy and paste your search string from one engine to an other (control C to copy Control V to paste)

Use the tools that the search engines provide, Google has an Advance search tool at http://www.google.com/advanced_search

Remember to phrase the question in different ways, as this will often change the results, a search for “search engines are” will give results that are less commercial than just “search engines”

I hope that these tips will make your searching more enjoyable and more importantly give you the results that you need.

How to get your blog found!

April 29th, 2008 · No Comments

I got the inspiration for this tip from Tim Lindens blog http://www.timlinden.com/blog/website-development/getting-your-blog-known/  and I agree with all his points but for me the single biggest way to get traffic to my blog is to write articles, and link my resourse box back to my blog, this way any of my readers is able to find other things that I have written.

When I publish an article, I use a submission service that places it in dozens of directories and ezines, which gives each article a huge chance of bein read. It also places my back link on to many sites so the search enngine robots are able to find and index me quickly.

Can my Resource Box affect my sales?

April 25th, 2008 · No Comments

The answer is a most definite yes!
Lets look at what a resource box is, first and foremost it is your opportunity to place your link on the many sites that hopefully pick up your article.
By placing your key word anchor text in your box and linking it to your site you are increasing the number of back links for your site and increasing the key word relevance as well.
After your anchor text, I suggest that you include a short one or two sentence description of your offer, concluding with a call to action.
The second function of your resource box is your by line, it is surprising the number of authors who take the trouble to research and write an article and then forget to ad their by line. If your reader doesn’t know who wrote the piece how can you earn credit for it?
The last function, of your resources box is to collect the name and address of your reader, the easiest way of doing this is to offer them something of real value, for example a free report that they must sign up to download.
If you vary the layout and wording of your box you will help to make each article a unique item.
 What not to include
A list of all your websites, this is because many article directories will automatically convert any url in to a link, and if your box is stuffed with links particularly if they are not relevant to the article, your article is likely to be rejected as Spam.
A list of all your achievements, frankly only you and your mum care!
Any advertising that is not relevant to the article.
Finally keep the size of the box to an absolute minimum, any more that 20% of the size of the article and you will be seen as taking advantage.

Affordable ways to get visitors to your website

Writing Articles as an Affordable Internet Marketing Method

With Xtremekeyword, a free  keyword suggestion tool, you will see the millions of searches done to a certain keyword. When these keywords are typed on search boxes of search engines, indexed websites containing articles with those keywords will be displayed. And this is what leads traffic to websites with keyword-rich articles. Yes, the magic word is articles.

You have heard the expression “Content is king.” That is why writing articles is one of the most utilized Internet marketing methods today. Internet surfers just can’t get enough of information on various fields. Providing information through these articles is a surefire way to drive hot traffic to your web site.

 Why is this so?

Here are the benefits that writing articles can give your Internet business.

 1. It’s absolutely free.
Too good to be true? Not.

Okay, you have to pay for your Internet Service Provider. That’s it. All you need is your thoughts, your computer, and your hands. If you have those, nothing will stop you from typing words that will make you complete that article for your website. On which aspect of that process did you really shell out any cent? Maybe later when your electric bills come.

2. Your website will be noticed in a short period of time.

Submit that article of yours to article directories that get the most web traffic and in no time your web site will be crawled. That is if you don’t forget including your resource box or byline.

 3. Obtain back links automatically.

When you submit your articles to directories, surely, other websites will make use of your article too. With the copyright terms of your articles, the URL of your website will still be intact and will subsequently direct more traffic to your website.
4. Improve your reputation.
As an Internet marketer, if you plainly display your products on your website, you will not gain much conversion rate. Conversion is when your traffic converts to sales. You have to show that you are knowledgeable on your field. And what better way to show that than by writing articles that will allow you some bragging rights, right?

Just make your creative juices flow and jot down or key in those ideas quickly to jump start your article writing momentum. With those benefits listed above, a writer’s block is the last problem you will ever be able to surmount.

Free one way back links
The number and quality of back links to your site has a large effect on the pagerank of your site, and this can influence the position of your site in the search engines. You can increase the number of links that you get by placing free text ads with sites such as 1WayLink.net and Instantlinks.biz and newgenads.com

There are many free ad sites, and it is easy to place lots of ads, but remember that you will get loads of mail so use a gmail account so your regular account is not choked with rubbish.

Another thing to remember is to make the tag line of the ad match the key word that you want to use. For example for yourprohits.com my traffic exchange, I want to get listed for the keyword “free manual traffic exchange” so that is the tag line I use.
